History of the International Migrants Day

On 18 December 1990, a resolution was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. 7 years later, Filipino and other Asian migrant organizations began celebrating December 18 as the International Day of Solidarity with Migrants.

Following this observation, in 1999 the Steering Committee for the Global Campaign for Ratification of the International Convention on Migrants’ Rights, Migrant Rights International, and many other organizations started an online campaign for the adoption of International Migrant’s Day by the United Nations. The final resolution to celebrate International Migrant’s Day was adopted on 4 December 2000 and the first official IMD celebration was held on 18 December 2000.
