Islamic Calendar 2022: (1443 AH – 1444 AH) Hijri Calendar

Islamic Calendar 2022 is also known by many other names like Hijri Calendar, Lunar Hijri Calendar, Muslim Calendar, etc. It is a lunar calendar based on the position of the moon and it has 12 lunar months in a year of 354 or 355 days. Muslims around the world will follow Islamic Calendar 2022 to determine the exact dates of Islamic rituals and holidays. Determination of the  annual period of fasting and the proper time for the Hajj is based on the Hijri Calendar or Islamic Calender 2022.

The current Islamic year is 1443 AH and it will run approximately to the date of 28th July 2022 as per the Gregorian calendar. After that, the next year i.e. 1444 AH will begin. In this post, we are sharing Islamic Calendar 2022. Apart from this, we will also some interesting information about the Hijri Calendar or Islamic calendar 2022.

Days of the week in Islamic Calendar 2022

Just like Gregorian Calendar, Islamic Calendar 2022 also has 7 days a week. The names of days in an Islamic week along with their meaning and English equivalent are given below.

  • al-ʾAḥad (the One) – Sunday
  • al-Ithnayn (the second) – Monday
  • ath-Thulāthāʾ(the third) – Tuesday
  • al-ʾArbiʿā (the fourth) – Wednesday
  • al-Khamīs (the fifth) – Thursday
  • al-Jumʿah (the gathering) – Friday
  • as-Sabt (the Rest) – Saturday

Names in months in Islamic (Hijri) Calendar 2022

Islamic Calendar 2022 also has 12 months. Names of each month along with meanings are given below.

  1. al-Muḥarram (forbidden) – This is a sacred month because battles fighting are forbidden (ḥarām) during this month.
  2. Ṣafar (void) – This month got its name because as the in pre-islamic era, Arab houses during this time were empty. All house members used to leave home during this month to gather food.
  3. Rabīʿ al-ʾAwwal (the first spring) – It is a very sacred month because it was the month in which the Prophet Muhammad was born.
  4. Rabīʿ ath-Thānī or Rabīʿ al-ʾĀkhir (the second spring, the last spring)
  5. Jumadā al-ʾŪlā (the first of parched land) – This month is often considered as the pre-Islamic summer. Jumādā may also be related to a verb meaning “to freeze”. Some accounts state that water would freeze during this time of year.
  6. Jumādā ath-Thāniyah or Jumādā al-ʾĀkhirah (the second of parched land, the last of parched land)
  7. Rajab (respect, honour) –This is the second sacred month in which fighting is forbidden as per the Islamic rituals. In this month, Arabs used to refrain from fighting.
  8. Shaʿbān (scattered) – This month marks that time of the year when Arab tribes dispersed to find water.
  9. Ramaḍān (burning heat) – Here the Burning means fasting with an empty stomach will result in the burning of one’s worldly desire. This is the most venerated month of the Hijri calendar. During this time, Muslims around the world observe fast from pre-dawn until sunset and give charity to the poor and needy.
  10. Shawwāl (raised) – This month is also of great importance. On the first day of this month, the Eid al-Fitr, “Festival of Breaking the Fast” begins, marking the end of fasting and the end of Ramadhan.
  11. Ḏū al-Qaʿdah (the one of truce/sitting) – It is a holy month and all wars are banned in this month. However, people are allowed to defend themselves if they are attacked.
  12. Ḏū al-Ḥijjah (the one of pilgrimage) – This is the last month of the year. In this month, Muslim pilgrims from all around the world congregate at Mecca to visit the Kaaba.
