In India, Kargil Vijay Diwas 2023 is being celebrated on 26 July to mark the victory of India over Pakistan in the famous Kargil war. The day honors the Kargil war heroes and the sacrifices made by them.

In the Kargil war that took place from May 1999 to July 1999, the Indian army declared India’s victory on July 26, 1999 and henceforth the day came to be celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas.

History of Kargil Vijay Diwas

In the 1990s, tension started brewing more intensely between India and Pakistan due to separatists activities carried out in Kashmir. To control the situation, both countries entered into Lahore Declaration in February 1999, but secretly Pakistan was training and sending troops into Indian side of LOC. They named the infiltration Operation Badri and the aim was to break the Kashmir-Ladakh link and force India into negotiating a settlement to the Kashmir dispute. Pakistan had also believed that by brewing tension in the region it would be able to internationalize the Kashmir issue, and will lead securing a prompt resolution.

Earlier assumed to be infiltration by jihadis, Indian army soon realized that the attack by planned and launched by the Pakistani army. Indian Government retaliated with Operation Vijay and mobilized around two lakh Indian army troops to evict the Pakistani army. Finally on July 26 1999, Pakistani army was forced out from the occupied positions. The war came to an end and the day was declared as Kargil Vijay Diwas. However, India lost 527 of its brave soldiers in the war.
