Rohini is one of the Nakshatra out of twenty-seven Nakshatra and there is a custom of keeping a fast on this day. Rohini Vrat is observed mainly by women of Jain community and falls on the day when Rohini Nakshatra prevails after sunrise. On this day, women fast all day long and pray for long and prosperous life of their husbands. Jain god Vasupujya is worshipped on the day of Rohini Vrat.

Significance of Rohini Vrat

Rohini Vrat is considered as an important festival for people for Jain community and a large number of women observe day-long fast on this day. The purpose of observing the fast is to seek long and happy life for the husbands.

Not just the husband of the women observing fast, but Rohini Vrat is believed to be beneficial for other members of their family as well. Observing this fast relieves the person from all the sins and brings peace and tranquility in the house.

Observing this vrat is not limited to women of the family and other members can keep this fast as well. Duration for which the women want to observe this fast depends on their own convenience but it is believed that observing it for three, five or seven years is beneficial than any other duration. Generally, it is said that fasting for a period of five years and five months fulfills every wishes of the person holding the fast. After the duration of fasting is over, the Vrat should be concluded with udyapan.

Rohini Vrat Kaise Kiya Jata Hai?

The Rohini Vrat begins when the Rohini Nakshatra rises in the sky after sunrise. On the day of Rohini, women wake up early morning and take a holy bath. They then offer prayers to Bhagwan Vasupujya and seek His blessings to provide long and happy life to their husbands filled with good health and wealth. Reciting mantras and reading Rohini Vrat katha is also a part of Rohini Vrat pooja vidhi.

After the pooja is over, women spend the rest of their day without intaking any food. Many women also distribute food and alms among the poor on the day of Rohini Vrat. The fasting comes to an end with the rising of the Mrigashirsha Nakshatra. Observing this fast is also believed to remove poverty and sorrows from one’s life.

Rohini Vrat Katha

The Rohoni Vrat katha is about King Ashoka of Hastinapur and his wife Rohini. Once, a sage arrived at their palace and the king asked him why is her queen remains always silent. The sage then told him a story:

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Durgandha born to a man named Dhanmitra. The daughter used to live very poorly and that was the main concern of the man that how is he going to get her married. He somehow manages to get her married to a man by giving him a lot of money but eventually he was forced to leave.

When a sage came to the town in which Dhanmitra lived, he told the sage about his problem and asked for its solution. The sage told him that once there was a king named Bhupaal who used to live in Girnar maountains with his queen Sindhumati. One day the king asked his wife to prepare food for a sage that he was tgoing to invite over to his palace. Queen agreed but became furious about this and served some bitter food to the sage. The sage got angry and cursed the queen that she will become terribly sick and after death will go straight to hell. After so many lives as animal and worms, the queen was born as Durgandha, your daughter.

He then told him that to get rid of her bad fortune, she needs to observe fast on the day of Rohini and distribute alms in the poor. She was told to observe this fast for five years and five months. On completion of the duration of her past, all her misfortune turned into fortune and she spent her life happily ever after.

The sage told king Ashoka and his wife to observe the Rohini Vrat to eliminate all their problems. All their sins were forgiven and they achieved salvation.
