Every year World Art Day is observed on 15th of April to promote awareness about the creative activity and its relation with the elements of the society. A proposal was passed at the 17th General Assembly of the International Association of Art in Guadalajara regarding the celebration of World Art Day. The International Association of Art (IAA) decided that from 2012 onward, every year April 15 will be observed as World Art Day. History of World Art Day

In order to promote awareness of creative activity worldwide, the first World Art Day was held on April 15th 2012. A proposal was put forward by the IAA to declare April 15 as World Art Day. The proposal was sponsored by Bedri Baykam of Turkey and co-signed by Rosa Maria Burillo Velasco of Mexico, Anne Pourny of France, Anders Liden of Sweden, Kan Irie of Japan, and many others. Afterwards, it was accepted unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly. The date was decided in honor of the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo Da Vinci was considered as a symbol of multiculturalism, world peace, freedom of expression, brotherhood, tolerance and other important aspect of life that he reflected through his art.

Significance of World Art Day

Art can connect and unite people in many ways and plays a major role in promoting communication and sharing knowledge among people of different heritages. The World Art Day is celebrated to nurture creativity and innovation in the artists all over the globe and to promote unity in cultural diversity. Art has many other qualities as well and to provide an environment where artists and artistic freedom are promoted and protected, the World Art Day is observed every year on 15 April. More than 150 artists from South Africa, France, Sweden, Slovakia and other countries across the globe celebrated the first World Art Day on April 15, 2012 with great enthusiasm. Different artistic events are conducted in different countries but the idea behind the celebration remains the same. Activities such as debates, conferences, workshops, cultural events and presentations or exhibitions are also conducted in various countries on the occasion of World Art Day. Observance of World Art Day has also been supported by the Google Art Project.
