Hart started acting at the age of four and appeared in a television commercial for Splashy, a bathtub doll. She later appeared in around 25 commercials within a year. Joan then made appearances in the miniseries Kane & Abel in 1985, a guest role in The Equalizer, and a starring role in the TV movie Christmas Snow, both in 1986.
