At a very early age, Abdul started taking dance lessons in ballet, jazz and tap. She became a topmost cheerleader and an honor student at her school and received a scholarship to a dance camp near Palm Springs when she was only 15. Paula has also appeared in a low-budget independent musical film, Junior High School in 1978 while she was still at school.

After graduation, Paula began studying broadcasting at the California State University where she got selected for the cheer leading squad of the Los Angeles Lakers NBA basketball team in her freshman year. She became the head choreographer of the squad before being discovered by The Jacksons.
