R Kelly was born as Robert Sylvester Kelly on January 8, 1967 at Chicago, Illinois, United States. He has five siblings. His mother’s name is Joanne who was a school teacher and devout Baptist. Later, Kelly’s mother married his stepfather who used to work for an airline.

R Kelly started singing in the church choir when he was just 8 years old. Lulu was his first girlfriend and musical inspiration when he was 8 years old- according to his autobiography.

He was also sexually abused by an older female family member when his age was in between 8 to 14 years.

Kelly joined Kenwood Academy in September 1980 where he met a music teacher Lena McLin who genuinely encouraged him to perform “Ribbon in the Sky” in the high school talent show. Later McLin encouraged him to focus more on music and leave the high school basketball team.

Upon performing for years in the streets of Chicago, R Kelly finally started his career in the year 1991. He released his first album ‘Born Into The 90’s’ with Jive Records and it was a huge success.

The first solo album of Kelly named ‘12 Play’ was released on November 9, 1993. Subsequently, he released singles: “Your Body’s Callin” and “Sex Me” both of them sold 500,000 copies in the United States only and were certified Gold by the RIAA.

Later in the year 1995 he garnered his 1^st Grammy nominations and two for composing and producing Michael Jackson’s hit “You Are Not Alone”.
