Richard Gere was born on August 31, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Doris Ann and Homer George Gere. His mother was a housewife while his father was an NMIC insurance agent who originally wanted to become a minister.

He went to North Syracuse Central High School where he was an expert gymnast and musician who played trumpet. Gere later went to the University of Massachusetts Amherst on a gymnastics scholarship where he studied philosophy. After attending university for two years he dropped out without completing his graduation.

From 1971 to 1978, Richard Gere was in an on-again/off-again relationship with actress Penelope Milford. From 1978 to 1986, he dated painter Sylvia Martins. In 1969, Gere started acting at the Seattle Repertory Theatre and the Provincetown Playhouse. His first major acting role came in 1973 with the original London stage version of the musical “Grease”. In the mid-1970s Gere began appearing in Hollywood eefilms and was cast in the movies such as “Looking for Mr. Goodbar” (1977) and “Days of Heaven” (1978).
