Initial Struggle and Saturday Night Live

David’s comic career started while still in college but once he started making a decent living, he dropped out. He began performing in comedy shows at Greasy Tony’s Pizza in Arizona and later moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career further. While performing at The Improv, he was spotted by a talent agent and offered a role in the movie “Police Academy 4″ in 1987. This marked his film debut in Hollywood. In 1990, he joined Saturday Night Live as a writer and was later moved up to cast member. He gained quite some popularity while on SNL after his characters and sketches started getting hit.

Professional Career

Following the moderate success of Police Academy 4, Spade starred in the movies “Tommy Boy” and “Black Sheep” that he created with his SNL cast member Chris Farley. Spade was all set to make another movie with him, but Farley died of a drug overdose and thus it was canceled. He even got multiple offers for his own TV show but turned them down to star in the office sitcom “Just Shoot Me!”. Spade’s first solo role came with the film “Joe Dirt” released in 2001 which again became a moderate hit at the box office. Spade has also given his voice in Disney’s movie “The Emperor’s New Groove” and its direct-to-video sequel “Kronk’s New Groove”.

In 2003, David appeared in the movie “Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star” which he also co-wrote and produced. He also starred alongside his SNL cast member and renowned actor Adam Sandler in “Grown Ups” and “Grown Ups 2”. Both these movies were liked by the audiences but still failed to perform well at the box office. In 2004, David joined the cast of “8 Simple Rules”, for the show’s third and final season after its main star John Ritter died. Spade’s first major dramatic role came with the 2018 movie “Warning Shot”.

Spade has also hosted many award shows including the “Teen Choice Awards” and “SpikeTV’s Video Game Awards”. He was also the host of the Comedy Central TV show “The Showbiz Show with David Spade”. In 2020, Spade guest hosted two episodes of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” while Jimmy was on summer vacation.

Philanthropy

Spade donated $100,000 to the Phoenix Police Department in 2005 to buy firearms. In 2013, he again made a major donation of $200,000 to the Oklahoma tornado relief program and again $100,000 toward the ALS ice bucket challenge in 2014. In 2018, after his sister-in-law Kate Spade committed suicide, David made a donation of $100,000 to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
