Joseph Vijay was born on 22nd June 1974 in a Tamil Speaking family. His mother, Shoba Chandrasekhar is a playback singer and carnatic vocalist, and his father, S. A. Chandrasekhar, is a director of Tamil films.

Vijay’s father is a Christian and his mother is a Hindu. He was baptised when he was 12 years old. Vidhya, Vijay’s sister, passed away when she was just two years old.
