Roy Cooper was born on June 13, 1957, in Nashville, North Carolina to Beverly Batchelor and Roy Asberry Cooper II. His mother was a teacher and his father a lawyer. Cooper graduated from Northern Nash High School in 1975 and while he was in school, he used to work on his parents’ tobacco farm during summer. Cooper completed his undergraduate studies from the University of North Carolina and earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1982.
Cooper is married to Kristin Cooper. Kristin worked as a guardian ad litem for foster children in Wake County. The couple together have three daughters and the family currently reside in the Executive Mansion. All of Cooper’s daughter have also graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, same as their father.

In November 2000, Cooper defeated Republican lawyer Dan Boyce and Reform Party candidate Margaret Palms to become the attorney general of North Carolina.
