Bernard Sanders was born on September 8, 1941, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City to Dorothy Sanders and Elias Ben Yehuda Sanders. Sanders met Deborah Shiling Messing in college and married her in 1964. The couple had no children and got divorced in 1966.
