Bernard Sanders was born on September 8, 1941, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City to Dorothy Sanders and Elias Ben Yehuda Sanders. His father was born in the current-day Poland and immigrated to the United States in 1921 where he started working as a paint salesman. Bernie is the younger brother of politician Larry Sanders and became interested in politics at an early age due to his family background.
Sanders met Deborah Shiling Messing in college and married her in 1964. The couple had no children and got divorced in 1966. In 1988, Sanders married Jane O’Meara Driscoll, a political strategist, social worker, activist and college administrator. Bernie has one biological son, Levi Sanders (born in 1969 to then-girlfriend Susan Campbell Mott), and three other stepchildren from his second marriage.
