Zeldin was born on January 30, 1980 in East Meadow, New York to Merrill Schwartz and David Zeldin. He was raised within a mix of Conservative Judaism and Reform Judaism. Zeldin graduated from William Floyd High School, New York in 1998 and received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the SUNY University, Albany in 2001. Zeldin served in the United States Army from 2003 to 2007 and then transitioned from active duty to the Army Reserve, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel. The same year he became an attorney for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

In 2010, Zeldin was elected to New York’s 3rd State Senate district where he ran against Democratic incumbent Brian X. Foley. Zeldin defeated Foley with 57% of the vote. He was reelected in 2012, defeating Democrat Francis Genco with 56% of the vote. In April 2021, Zeldin announced he would run for governor of New York in 2022 and in June he was finally selected as the party’s representative after defeating opponents Rob Astorino, Andrew Giuliani, and Harry Wilson. Zeldin faced incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul in the November general election and which he then lost to her.

Lee Zeldin was challenging Democratic party representative Kathy Hochul in the 2022 November election for Governor of New York. There was a very close fight going on in the polls of both the representatives in which ultimately Kathy won with 52.9% of the votes. Zeldin won 47.1% of the vote and lost the election with a low difference.
