Jones began doing stand-up comedy while still in college. After her friend signed her up for a “Funniest Person on Campus” contest and Jones won it, she left school for Los Angeles. While in LA, she performed at comedy clubs while working day jobs to make ends meet. She later moved to New York City to hone her craft for two years before returning to Los Angeles. Her career had a slow start but she was able to open a tour for Jamie Foxx. It was finally in 2010 that one night, Chris Rock saw her perform and gave her name to many top managers but all claimed not to get it. However, Rock was eventually able to help Jones get a job at Saturday Night Live.

At the age of 47 years, she became the oldest person to join the show as a cast member. Jones subsequently returned for four more seasons.
