Early Life

Ronnie Dean Coleman was born on May 13th, 1964 in Monroe, Louisiana. He attended Grambling State University and graduated with a B.Sc. degree in accounting in 1984.

Coleman used to play football during his time in college as a middle linebacker with the GSU Tigers. Eddie Gay Robinson Sr. was his coach.

Despite a lot of effort, he was unable to get a job as an accountant. So, he started working in Domino’s Pizza. Here, he survived on complementary pizza because he could not afford food outside of work.

In 1989, he joined the Texas Police Force where he worked as a reserve officer until 2003.

Career as a Bodybuilder

Coleman joined the Metroflex gym on a suggestion from his fellow police officer Gustavo Arolotta. Here, an amateur bodybuilder Brian Dobson trained him.

In 1990, he went on to become Mr. Texas in both heavyweight and overall categories. Surprisingly, he also defeated his trainer Dobson.

As a professional, Coleman won his first competition i.e. the Canada Pro Cup in 1995. Coleman gained recognition when he won the Mr. Olympia contest (the most prestigious worldwide) in 1998.

After that, he went on to win 7 more titles consecutively till 2005. In 2001, he became the first person in the world to win both the Arnold Classic and the Mr. Olympia titles in the same year.
