Global Family Day Significance

History of Global Family Day Observation

The first critical step towards observance of Global Family Day was taken in 1997 when the United Nations General Assembly began making plans for launching the International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. A major initiative in this effort was taken with the launch of a book sponsored by Linda Grover, called “One Day in Peace – January 1, 2000”. The book revolved around the idea that some day in the future there could be a time when there is no more war on the planet. With the book, the idea for the decade of peace also got launched by the UN.

As the idea for the decade of peace continued to grow, it was decided by the United Nations member states to dedicate January 1^st 2001 as the global day to making efforts toward building peace on the planet. The day and the events following were quite successful and gained attention from every corner of the world. As such, the United Nations decided to make it an annual event beginning in 2001 and named it Global Family Day. The first Global Family Day was celebrated on January 1, 2001 and has been observed every year since.
