Jamal Murray was born on February 23, 1997, in Kitchener, Ontario, to Sylvia and Roger Murray. His father ran track and field and played basketball as a youth and later became a professional boxer. At the age of six, Murray started playing basketball in a league for ten-year-old, and by the age of 12, he began playing pick-up games against top high school and college players. His father played a pivotal role in his career, putting Murray through many basketball drills. Jamal also has a younger brother named Lamar.

High School & College

Murray was enrolled in Orangeville Prep in Ontario where his father was an assistant coach. Jamal started showing his best game during his high school career and with his help, Orangeville Prep defeated many American schools in basketball. He was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the 2013 Jordan Brand Classic International Game and again at the 2015 Nike Hoop Summit. The same year, Murray was also named MVP of the 2015 BioSteel All-Canadian Basketball Game. The list only included the top high school players in Canada. 

In 2015, Murray attended the University of Kentucky and started playing for their basketball team under the renowned coach John Calipari. As a freshman, Murray was featured on the Midseason Top 25 list for the John R. Wooden Award and was also named a third-team All-American by the Associated Press following the freshman season.
