Morgan Freeman was born on June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee to Mamie Edna and Morgan Porterfield Freeman. His mother was a teacher while his father was a barber. Morgan was the youngest of his parents’ four children. Freeman made his acting debut at age 9 and won a statewide drama competition at the age of 12. When he grew up, Morgan enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served as an Automatic Tracking Radar repairman. He later went on to study theater arts at Los Angeles City College, where he was encouraged by a teacher to become a dancer.

Freeman started his career in the entertainment industry as a dancer and was also a member of the Opera Ring musical theater group. For a brief period, he also worked as a clerk typist.
