World Statistics Day is observed every five years on October 20 and is celebrated to mark the importance of statistics in human lives. The important day also aims to create awareness of the accomplishment of official statistics based on the values of service, professionalism and integrity.

The last World Statistics Day was observed on October 20, 2020 and the next will be observed on October 20, 2025. There will be no World Statistics Day 2023.

Significance of World Statistics Day

The next World Statistics Day will be observed in 2025 and will focus on the importance of statistics in academic research and in the development of civil society and businesses. Statistics are indispensable to the social and economic development of any country and help with informed decision making.

Why do we observe World Statistics Day?

The proposal to observe World Statistics Day was put forward by the United Nations Statistical Commission at the 41st Session of UN General Assembly in February 2010. the commission believed that the production of reliable, timely statistics and indicators of countries’ progress is critical for informed policy decisions and monitoring implementation of the Millennium Development Goals. Acknowledging this, the General Assembly adopted resolution 64/267 on 3 June 2010 which officially designated 20 October 2010 as the first ever World Statistics Day. The first World Statistics Day was celebrated in over 130 countries under the general theme “Celebrating the many achievements of official statistics.”

Again in 2015, the General Assembly adopted another resolution, 96/282, that designated 20 October 2015 as the second World Statistics Day and also adopted the observation of this day every five years. The theme for World Statistics Day 2020 celebration was “Better data, better lives.”

On the occasion of World Statistics Day, countries come together to collaborate on statistical management and dedicate more effort to the process of gathering statistics. Many statistical offices and associations, international organizations, universities, civil society organizations and individuals organize and take part in multiple fun activities to celebrate this important day. For World Statistics Day 2025, no theme has been decided yet.
