International Beer Day (First Friday of August) on 4 August

Every first Friday of August month is observed as International Beer Day. The purpose behind this day is to simply gather with friends and share beer with them and to honor those who brew and serve beer. In the year 2024, International Beer Day will be observed on August 4, 2024.

Friendship Day (First Sunday of August) on 4 August

Friendship Day, also International Friendship Day or Friend’s Day, is celebrated by different countries around the world on first Sunday of August every year. Other than this, many countries may also have their specific Friendship Day celebration on other dates.

Hiroshima Day on 6 August

Hiroshima Day is observed every year on 6 August in commemoration of atomic bombings on Hiroshima, Japan. In the year 1945, United States dropped two bombs on Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki killing around 129,000 and 226,000 people respectively in these bombings.

Quit India Movement Day on 8 August

The Quit India Movement, also famously known as the August Movement, was launched by Mahatma Gandhi after his Quit India speech delivered in Bombay on 8 August 1942. Started fiercely, the movement was however crushed soon by the Britishers.

Nagasaki Day on 9 August

Nagasaki Day is observed every year on 9 August in commemoration of atomic bombings on Nagasaki, Japan. In the year 1945, United States dropped two bombs on Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki killing around 129,000 and 226,000 people respectively in these bombings.

World Biofuel Day on 10 August

To raise awareness among people regarding the advantages of using non-fossil fuels over fossil fuels, World Biofuel Day is observed in India every year on 10th August. The first World Biofuel Day was celebrated by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in 2015.

International Youth Day on 12 August

Every year International Youth Day is observed on August 12th with the aim to draw attention toward youth issues worldwide. The first International Youth Day was observed by the United Nations on 12 August, 2000.

International Lefthanders Day on 13 August

To raise awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed and to address other issues like the likelihood for left-handed people to develop schizophrenia, August 13 is celebrated as International Lefthanders Day.

Independence Day (India) on 15 August

India got its independence from the British rules on 15th August 1947 and this day is celebrated as the Independence Day in the country. It is one of the three national holidays observed in India along with Gandhi Jayanti and Republic Day. The day is celebrated by hoisting flags and organizing cultural programs.

World Humanitarian Day on 19 August

To honor the work of humanitarians and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes, the United Nations adopted 19th August to be celebrated as World Humanitarian Day.

World Mosquito Day on 20 August

Every year, 20 August marks the day on which British doctor Sir Ronald Rossdiscovered that female mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans and is observed as World Mosquito Day.

Madras Day (India) on 22 August

To commemorate the founding of the city of Madras (now Chennai), 22 August every year is observed as Madras Day. Since 2004, Madras Day is celebrated every year with fairs, exhibitions, cultural festivals, etc.

International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition on 23 August

In the memory of the Atlantic slave trade (transatlantic slave trade), the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is observed every year on 23rd August.

Women’s Equality Day (US) on 26 August

Every year, United States observes August 26 as Women’s Equality Day and is celebrated in commemoration of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. The Amendment prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote on the basis of sex.

International Day against Nuclear Tests on 29 August

To raise awareness about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions, the International Day against Nuclear Tests is observed every year on August 29. The day also commemorates the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site on August 29, 1991.

International Day of the Disappeared on 30 August

To draw attention toward the individuals who are imprisoned at places and under poor conditions not even known to their relatives, the International Day of the Disappeared is observed on August 30 of each year.
