Origin of National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day

A New York housewife named Florence Rappaport coined the term “Ice Cream for Breakfast Day” in the 1960s. Since a major snowstorm rocked the New York region in 1966–and this wonderful little narrative revolves around cold and snowy weather–no one knows exactly when the day was created, but it is speculated that it may have been 1966.

The day’s inspiration came from Florence’s six children, who were all feeling particularly bored on a snowy, icy morning in February. She believed it was her responsibility as both a mother and a social worker to find ways to keep her children occupied so they wouldn’t get agitated and irritable. In her own words, “The kids were whining that it was too cold to do anything. It was icy and snowing.” To which he responded by saying: “Let’s eat ice cream for breakfast.”

Florence’s six children, who had clearly liked their mother’s new small getaway, reminded her of it the next year. The next year, they held another celebration, and it was thereafter adopted as a family custom.

As the day wore on, so did the craze. Florence’s grandkids, many of whom have traveled much, have spread the word about their grandmother’s notion. Today, countries worldwide, from Germany to Namibia, commemorate Ice Cream for Breakfast Day, which was first observed more than 60 years ago.
