The breadth of technology has grown exponentially since the advent of the wheel. Who would have guessed that humans would be able to fly or appear on screens just a few generations earlier? Is it possible to envisage a whole day without a mobile phone?

On May 11, 1999, the day was first commemorated. The date was chosen since it was on this day that India joined the elite squad of nuclear-armed nations. India recently accomplished three nuclear tests at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Testing Range which is situated in Rajasthan on 11th May, 1998. The trials were carried out as part of Operation Shakti.

The government chose to designate the day as National Technology Day as a result of all of these technical achievements. The Ministry of Science and Technology hosts a number of lectures and workshops on this day.
