Partition Horrors Remembrance Day Meaning

The Government of India declared August 14 to be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day so that the current and future generations of Indians will understand and remember the pain of people who suffered during partition.

There is an estimate that shows one to two million people were died during the partition period in the year 1947. This partition displaced around 10 to 20 million people with religious lines, producing irresistible refugee crises in the newly constituted dominions.

The trains carrying the people became “ghost trains” as mob targeted crowd travelling from one direction to other.

As a child of parents who suffered during India’s Partition1947, I am extremely grateful to PM Narendra Modi Ji for declaring August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. This will forever be a reminder of the human misery caused by wrong policies of the then Govt.-Tweeted Hardeep Singh Puri.

– Tweeted Home Minster Amit Shah

Bikramaditya Kumar Choudhary, A JNU Professor, mentioned, “Our understanding is on the basis of reading of the narratives and text and talking to people. It was not a one-day incident that you want to remember, it was also a culmination of hate politics.”
He further said Partition occurred in 1947 as a result of there was a nurturing of hate for greater than 20 years. “It has always led us to disaster. And one disaster that India has faced was the hate politics, created by the colonial empire, because it suited them,”.

Retired JNU Sociology Professor said- “It is a worrying thing that the top leader is looking backwards. Earlier, it was citizenship and Article 370… Partition was an issue of an unholy alliance of the British and political leaders, including the Muslim League, Hindu Mahasabha, and, to an extent, the Indian National Congress. The new generation will not be impressed by the interpretation of the communal forces in the face of other global challenges and multiculturalism.”
