Significance of Dhanteras Puja

It is believed that Lord Dhanvantari, the God of Ayurvedic Medicine appeared on the earth on the day of Dhanteras. In his honor, the Indian ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) announced Dhanteras to be celebrated as National Ayurveda Day and it was first observed on 28 October 2016.

In Jainism, the festival is celebrated as Dhanyateras and it is believed that on this day Mahavira was in the state of leaving everything in this world before obtaining salvation.

Story of Dhanteras Puja

Other than Lord Dhanvantari appearing from the sea there is another story behind the celebration of Dhanteras festival. According to a legend, once there was a prince who was destined to die of snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. On that particular day, his newly-wed wife laid out all gold and silver jewelry in a heap at the entrance of the sleeping chamber and lit many lamps. She started narrating stories and to keep her husband from sleeping.

When Yamaraj came in the form of a snake at the prince’s doorstep, his eyes were dazzled and blinded by the lamps and the jewelry. Failing to enter the prince’s chamber, he climbed on the heap of gold and silver and spend the entire night listening to the stories the price’s wife was narrating. When the morning came, he silently went away without harming the prince. This special day came to be celebrated as Dhanteras.
