Every year January 26^th is celebrated as International Environmental Education Day, also known as World Environmental Education Day. Observation of the day first gained momentum in 1972 with the Declaration of the United Nations Conference on Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden.

The conference was held in June 1972 which outlined the need for common principles so that the people are encouraged to preserve and sustain the quality of the environment.

The day is dedicated to raising awareness about climate change and sustainability and was first observed in 1975.

Significance

History of International Environmental Education Day Observation

Observation of International Environmental Education Day dates back to June 1972. a conference on Human Environment was organized by the United Nations in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972 where it was discussed how certain common principles and standards can help preserve and improve the environment today.

Following the conference, many countries gathered in the International Workshop on Environment, held in Belgrade in 1975. at this conference, the “Belgrade Charter” was published to illustrate the essential demands of environmental education and International Environmental Education Day was established as well. The first International Environmental Education Day was celebrated on January 26, 1975 and has been observed every year since then.
