Mallikarjun Kharge was born to a Dalit caste family on 21 July 1942. His father’s name is Shri Mapanna and his mother’s name is Shrimati Saibavva. He completed his schooling from Nutan Vidyalaya, Gulbarga. Further, he obtained his BA degree from the Government College, Gulbarga followed by his law degree from the Seth Shankarlal Lahoti Law College Gulbarga.

During his legal career, he fought many cases for labour unions as a junior in Justice Shivaraj Patil’s office. He started his political career as student union leader during his college days in the Government College, Gulbarga where he became the General Secretary of the students’ body.

Mallikarjun Kharge Personal Life: Mallikarjun Kharge married to Radhabai Kharge on 13th May 1968 and has five children including two daughters and three sons. Priyank Kharge and Priyadarshini Kharge are among their five children. In the year 2006, Kharge declared that he follows Buddhism.

Mallikarjun Kharge Political Career

Mallikarjun Kharge made his entry in the politics when he was in college. He became the student union leader when he was studying in Government College, Gulbarga. Later, he became the legal advisor to the MSK Mills Employees’ Union in the year 1969.

In the same year, Kharge joined the Indian National Congress where he became President of the Gulbarga City Congress Committee.

National Politics: Mallikarjun Kharge contested from the Gulbarga parliamentary seat in the 2014 general elections and won the election after defeating his BJP opponent by more than 13,404 votes. Later, he got appointment as the Leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha. However, in the 2019 general elections, a BJP candidate named Umesh. G. Jadhav defeated him by a margin of of 95,452 votes. On 12^th February 2021, he became the Leader of Opposition, Rajya Sabha. He further resigned from his post on 1^st October 2022 for contesting Indian National Congress party presidential position.
