History

The day of 24th December was chosen for the celebration of this day because on this date the Consumer Protection Act was passed by Parliament in 1986. The passing of this act was a historical event in the Indian Economy.

The bill of National Consumer Protection Act gives the following powers to customers in India.

  • Right to Safety – To get safety against goods and services that are injurious to health, property, and life
  • Right to Information – To information about the products or services that a business is selling. This includes details about usage, policy, date of manufacturing, date of expiry, purity, potency, etc.
  • Right to Seek Redressal – the right to seek a remedy in case of a grievance. This means that one person can complain to a Court or a Tribunal on the grounds of a violation of a consumer right.
  • Right to Consumer Education – It is the right to get all the updates regarding the rights of a customer.
  • Right to Choose – To get absolute freedom to choose products and services available in the market at competitive rates.
  • Right to be Heard – To get an appropriate forum to submit a complaint.

Jago Grahak Jago Campaign

The government of India has been trying to make citizens aware of customer rights for a long time. One of the most famous campaigns by the government is “Jago Grahak Jago” or “Wake Up Customer”.

This program was initiated by the “Department of Consumer Affairs (Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India” in 2005.

The objective of Jago Grahak is to educate consumers on all aspects of consumer protection and consumer rights. It also provides buyers with the knowledge to purchase goods, services and products fairly and responsibly.
