World White Cane Day Significance
Blind people use their senses of hearing and touching to explore and understand their surroundings. The functioning of their senses can be enhanced with the help of white cane by making their arms reach longer for a better assessment of their environment. With the help of white cane, people can not only move freely but quickly as well. White cane also makes it easier for them to avoid obstacles, find steps and curbs, locate and step over cracks or uneven places in the sidewalk, find doorways, get into cars and buses, and much more. The white cane is not just a tool that blind people use to explore and navigate their environment but it also keep them safe as drivers and other pedestrians can easily see it.
All in all, white cane is a tool for safety, independence and showcases equality as well. To promote the use of white cane and establish as a tool of independence and equality and to emphasize the shift in focus from safety to independence, White Cane Awareness Day 2023 will be observed on October 15.
History of World White Cane Day Observation
Blind people have relied on sticks and canes throughout the history but still there was a lack of trust that such people cannot travel on their own. In 1960s, the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) started a fight against this notion and for the independence of blind people. The NFB not only became a leader in fighting for the rights of the blind but also became a pioneering in developing innovative training programs using the white cane.
The National Federation of the Blind urged the United States Congress to adopt a joint resolution in to establish the observation of White Cane Safety Day. In 1964, the US Congress adopted October 15 of each year as White Cane Safety Day that recognizes the safety and independence of blind people.
