At the time of World War 2, there was a huge shortage of Administrative Professionals in the United States due to factors like booming post-war business, Depression-era birth-rate decline, etc. In 1942, the formation of The National Secretaries Association took place to recognize the contributions of administrative personnel economy and development of the United States. The key members of the National Secretaries Association were Mary Barrett, Harry F. Klemfuss, etc.

The celebration of this day was started as National Secretaries Week which used to be celebrated from 1st June 1952 to 7th June 1952. In this week, June 4 was designated as National Secretaries Day. The first National Secretaries’ Day was sponsored by the National Secretaries Association. It was supported by many corporate groups.

In 1955, the date for the celebration of National Secretaries Week was changed to the last full week of April. Now, Wednesday was designated as Administrative Professionals Day. Gradually, this day became famous with a large number of companies, firms, and organizations taking part in the celebrations.
