History of All Souls’ Day
From a very old time, certain days had been devoted to offering prayers for the dead who are suffering. However, in the 11th century, Abbot Odilo chose one single day of celebration for the dead in the purgatory. The day after All Saints’ Day which is observed on November 1 was selected as the celebration of All Souls’ Day. Since then, November 2nd of every year has been observed as All Souls’ Day. Before the observance of November 2, there were various dates of celebration of this day during the Easter season. Some Eastern Orthodox Church, Eastern Catholic, and Eastern Lutheran churches are still observing their All Soul’s Day as they did previously.
