History of International Day of Families

Attention was drawn towards the issues related to family by the United Nations in 1983 such as role of family in the development process, problems and needs of the family and ways to fix those problems. It was done on the basis of recommendations by the Economic and Social Council, the Commission for Social Development. On this basis, the United Nations general Assembly invited all States to present their views and proposals on the celebration of an international year of the family.

Finally, in a resolution passed on 9 December 1989, the General Assembly decided the celebration of International Year of the Family. In 1993, it was passed that every year 15^th of May will be observed as The International Day of Families.
