World Bicycle Day History

A Polish social scientist working in the United States, Professor Leszek Sibilski is known as the father of World Bicycle day. He started a campaign with the support of his sociology class students for promoting a UN Resolution for World Bicycle Day. The campaign gained momentum and was supported by Turkey and 56 other countries. He also launched an academic project that converted into a massive movement supported by ‘Sustainable Mobility for All’. This resulted in the United Nations selecting a separate day to celebrate and promote cycle and cycling. June 3 was selected as the World Bicycle Day and was observed firstly on 3 June 2018.

In celebration of the World’s Bicycle Day, a logo was designed by Isaac Feld and his co-animator Professor John E. Swanson. The UN Blue and White logo shows bicyclists riding on bicycles all over the globe. At the bottom, the logo consists of a hashtag #June3WorldBicycleDay. The logo is meant to display a simple message- bicycle supports sustainable development and serves all of humanity equally.

The significance of the day is to recognize, as stated by the UN “the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport.”
