Significance of World Brain Tumour Day

World Tumour Day 2024 will be observed on June 8, 2024, with the aim to educate people about this killer disease and how can they help those suffering from it. A lot of myths and misconceptions are out there about brain tumor that needs to be eliminated and the World Tumour Day offers a great opportunity for this.

Brain Tumor

A collection of abnormal cells that grow inside of a human brain is termed as brain tumor. These tumors can either be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous), but both these types can be life-threatening. Brain tumors can further be categorized as primary or secondary. A primary brain tumor originates in the brain whereas a secondary brain tumor occurs when cancer cells spread to the brain from another part of the body such as your lung or breast.

Brain tumors occur when the cells inside or near the brain start to change their DNA. However, the actual cause for the DNA to change is still not known.

The symptoms of a brain tumor may vary depending on the size and location of the tumor. Other than this, the symptoms also depend on how fast the tumor is growing. The general signs and symptoms of brain tumor include:

  • Headache or pressure in the head, especially in the morning
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Losing movement or feeling in an arm or a leg
  • Trouble with balance, speech and hearing
  • Fatigue, memory problems, dizziness, increased hunger, weight gain

Removal of the tumor via surgery is the only treatment available for malignant brain tumor. In certain cases, surgery can be combined with other treatments such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Many people are recommended physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy to help them recover after neurosurgery.
