A chronology of the World Thinking Day 2024

Thought Day was modified to “World Thinking Day” during a conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in 1999. Now it is a massive worldwide event that inspires the movement’s followers to consider more important matters in the world around them.

Every year on March 2, WAGGGS and its member organizations throughout the world commemorate World Thinking Day. This tradition dates back to 1926 when it was first instituted by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).

This is a day to rejoice in being a member of the broad worldwide network of female solidarity. World Thinking Day has a rich history that is well worth exploring.

At the 4th Globe Conference in New York in 1926, delegates from all around the world convened at Camp Edith Macy, now known as the Edith Macy Conference Center, and resolved to reserve a day for specially guides and girl scouts. To commemorate this momentous occasion, they chose Lord Baden and Powell’s wife Olave’s birthdays as the Thinking Day.

After a Belgian delegation proposed that girls may collect money for, World Thinking Day Fund, for the organization and demonstrate their gratitude in 1932, the idea was embraced. A coin was more than enough for a loaf of food in those days, therefore Lord Baden-Powell wrote to all guides and scouts across the globe to beg them for their support.
