History of International Men’s Day
The international call to observe International Men’s day was first made in 1960 in the form of rhetorical questions about gender equality. Men’s contributions and concerns deserve a day of recognition in their own right and so the question arose “Why do women have an international celebration and not men?” International Women’s Day celebration has been going on since 1901. In the New York Times in 1969 it was reported that “Many men have been agitating privately to make February 23 International Men’s Day, the equivalent of March 8, which is International Women’s day“.
Finally in 1999, International Men’s Day was founded by Dr Jerome Teelucksingh, a history lecturer at University of the West Indies in Trinidad Tabago. November 19 was selected as the day of observation and along with International Men’s Day on November 20, the day forms a 48-hour celebratory event.
