History of Cesar Chavez Day

Cesar Chavez was born on March 31, 1927, in Yuma, Arizona. He dedicated his life to fighting for the rights and fair treatment of farm workers. Along with Dolores Huerta, he played a vital role in organizing non-violent protests and strikes to advocate for better working conditions and higher wages.

In 1965, he played a vital role in the Delano grape strike in California. This strike lasted for five years and got support from various labor and civil rights organizations. Ultimately, the government was forced to sign the historic California Agricultural Labor Relations Act in 1975. This act granted farmworkers the right to organize and collectively bargain.

In recognition of Chavez’s significant contributions to the labor movement, Cesar Chavez Day was established as a state holiday in California in 1995. Later, other states joined the celebrations too. On March 31, 2008, Barack Obama, who was a senior senator at that time, endorsed the idea of creating a national holiday in honor of Chavez’s legacy.
