Watching couples happily celebrate valentine’s day and singles not knowing what to do except sulk in sadness was the driving force that led to the observation of Singles Awareness Day.

In 2001, a school kid named Dustin Barnes decided to create a day for his group of friends to enjoy their singleness and started the observation of Singles Awareness Day. A group of high school boys came together to choose February 15 as a protest to Valentine’s Day while having fun with their friends and thus, the day was born.

The tradition got carried with Barnes to his college, Mississippi State University, where the day gained popularity. The day was legitimately copyrighted in 2005 and continued to grow from there as a large population of US was single. Single people began celebrating the day with their single friends by exchanging gifts, throwing parties and going on friend dates.
