The Roman celebrations of the Lupercalia lasted from February 13 to February 15. During this time, males would sacrifice a dog and a goat and rejoice together.

Thus, the skins of the killed animals were afterwards used by males to administer corporal punishment to their female counterparts. Believing this made them more fruitful, young ladies queued up to be beaten by males.

During the festivities, males were randomly assigned names from a box and went up to the ladies in attendance and professed their love to them. In a few of cases, it was followed by a marriage.

But, in the 5th century, Pope Gelasius established St. Valentine’s Day as the date for Valentine’s Day. This is one of the reasons why the holiday is now linked to romance and the birth of love.
