Life History of Saint Kabir Das

Not very much is known about the birth of Kabir Das and there are many theories and beliefs related to it. Some historians believe that Kabir was born in 1398 CE and died in 1448 CE whereas other favor his birth in 1440 CE and death in 1518 CE. Similarly, there is a dispute about his early life where some believe that he was born to a Hindu mother and later brought up by Muslim parent while others claim he was born into a Muslim family itself.

According to a legend, Kabir was born to a Brahmin unwed mother in Varanasi, by a seedless conception and delivered through the palm of her hand. When she abandoned him in a basket floating in a pond, he was picked up and raised by a Muslim family. However, the theory presented in this legend is rejected by modern historians and it is believed that Kabir was born and brought up in a family of Muslim weavers. Some also say that Kabir appeared on a lotus flower in the lake Lahartara.

Kabir wrote many poems and dohas based mainly on devotion, mysticism and discipline, through which he tried to convey the true meaning of life. Written in a very simple language, his dohas have also been a part of school curriculum. He was also the founder of Kabir Panth, a community who spreads the teachings and preaches of Sant Kabir in the whole world. Its members are known as Kabir Panthis.

In addition to being important to the Hindu and Muslim community, Kabir and his work also play a major role in Sikhism and it is said that Guru Arjun, the fifth guru of Sikhs, collected his writings and formed them into the scripture of Sikhs.

Celebrations and festivities are held at many temples on the occasion of Kabirdas Jayanti. There are two temples in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), one Hindu and another Muslim, both devoted to Sant Kabir. His jayanti is celebrated with super excitement in these temples and followers of Kabir from different parts of the country visit these temples and take part in aarti, poem reciting and other activities observed in this temple. Pooja and aarti are observed in other temples as well. Special prasad is made on the day of Kabirdas Jayanti in temples and distributed among his devotees.

Many charitable work are also performed by his followers Kabir Panthis on the day of Kabir Jayanti. Activities like play based on kabir’s work, singing and dancing based on his poems, etc are carried out in many schools and colleges in the celebration of his birth anniversary. Seminars are also organized and the teaching of Sant Kabir are recited by his followers to provide some enlightenment to people about the life and work of Sant Kabir Das.
